Southfield Human Services provides a number of programs and services all designed to meet the specialized needs of our residents.
CHORES:
The City of Southfield’s CHORE program has been helping senior adults maintain their homes since its inception in 1983. Funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA), CHORE provides an annual spending account for income qualified senior homeowners. This grant can be used for services such as: lawn care, snow removal, window and gutter cleaning and labor costs for minor home repairs.
SHIP / The Southfield Home Improvement Program:
The Southfield Home Improvement Program (SHIP) is a 0% interest loan program for income qualified homeowners. The focus of the program concentrates on maintaining the existing structure as it relates to health and safety issues and minimum housing standards. It does not get involved with remodeling or updating for cosmetic purposes, additions or new construction projects. Typical improvements include: roofs, windows, doors, siding, insulation, heating, electrical and plumbing repairs.
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP): Partnerships with Focus Hope and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) to provide food boxes to families and seniors. TEFAP will take place at Southfield Human Services, 26000 Evergreen Road. This program is open to residents and allows participants to pick up 1 box of non-perishable food. Call for dates.
Free Legal Aid:
Free legal aid is available to low-income and senior Oakland, Macomb or Wayne County residents. An attorney will provide eligible clients advice on civil matters. Call (888) 783-8190 for more information.
State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services:
A Social Worker will provide the following services to residents: help apply for food, Medicaid, cash and emergency assistance, answer case questions, and provide referrals to other agencies. Call (248) 262-6400 or visit https://newMibridges.michigan.gov for more information.
Providing consultations/referrals that direct families to resources based on identified needs (i.e.—clothing, food, utility, housing, furniture).
Hardship assistance for qualified residents in partnership with: Northwest Unitarian Universalist Church, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Southfield/Lathrup CROP Hunger Walk, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Detroit Mar Thoma Church, Hope United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of Detroit, Korean Presbyterian Church of Metro Detroit, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Southfield Community Foundation of SE Michigan, Family Victory Fellowship Church, DENSO, Ford Motor Credit, Midwest Independent Retailers Foundation (MIRF), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Transportation Services:
The City of Southfield and SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority Regional Transportation) are continuously working together to improve community transit service to accommodate the needs of Southfield’s senior citizens and those with disabilities.
TOSS (Transportation of Southfield Seniors):
The Transportation of Southfield Seniors (TOSS) program provides safe, reliable service with lift-equipped vans for Southfield and Lathrup Village residents age 60 and older, as well as permanently physically challenged persons of any age. Riders must be physically and mentally capable of boarding the bus without assistance, or provide their own aide (at no additional charge).
Partners with Southfield Goodfellows to ensure that No Child Left Behind at Christmas.
Instituting the “Adopt-A-Family” program that allows area businesses, faith-based organizations and residents to contribute food and gifts to families during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
