CLIENTS SERVED: Low-income individuals and families, including children, seniors, veterans, survivors of domestic violence, families transitioning from homelessness, people affected by fires or foreclosure, foster parents, and people with disabilities or medical emergencies.

DESCRIPTION: Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit provides essential gently used furniture and mattresses to people rebuilding their homes after a crisis or experiencing financial hardship. Furniture is distributed primarily through a network of participating community agencies rather than directly to families. Furniture packages have a cost unless the referring agency covers it.

SERVICES / PROGRAMS:

• Furniture for Families: Provides furniture packages customized to household needs, including bedroom, living room, and kitchen furnishings. Items are gently used and must be clean, safe, and usable.
• Beds & Mattresses: Provides beds and mattresses, with a particular focus on children experiencing “bed poverty.”
• Community Pickup Area: Offers free furniture on a first-come, first-served basis. This is separate from the regular referral-based furniture program.
• Furniture Packages: Regular packages use a point system and currently range from approximately $125–$200. The client is responsible for the package cost unless the referring agency agrees to pay it.

HOW TO APPLY: Clients generally cannot apply directly to the Furniture Bank for the regular furniture program. They must receive a referral from a participating agency. To see the list of participating agencies, visit their Request Help page, and click on the button for Participating Agencies. Clients will be screened for income eligibility and need, and they will submit the referral.

For eligibility, the Furniture Bank states that clients may qualify if they receive government assistance such as Food Stamps or Medicaid, or have experienced a crisis such as a fire. Documentation of government assistance or the crisis is required.
