SERVICE AREA: Nationwide for ground transportation and commercial airline assistance. Private pilot flights through Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic serve Michigan and 10 other states plus Washington, D.C.
CLIENTS SERVED: Individuals and families with financial need who must travel outside their local area for medically necessary treatment, appointments, follow-up care, or clinical trials. Veterans may qualify for additional transportation programs.
Mercy Medical Angels provides free transportation assistance for medical care when travel costs or distance create a barrier to treatment. Transportation may include gas cards, rideshare assistance, bus or train tickets, commercial airline tickets, or free flights with volunteer pilots through Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic.
SERVICES & PROGRAMS:
- Ground Transportation: Gas cards, rideshare assistance, and bus or train tickets for qualifying medical travel. Ground assistance generally applies when the medical facility is at least 50 miles one way or travel to the same facility totals more than 100 miles per month.
- Commercial Flights: Assistance with airline tickets for longer-distance medical travel.
- Private Pilot Flights: Free flights through Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic, including service to and from Michigan.
- Veteran Travel Assistance: Additional transportation assistance for eligible Veterans, including travel for medical care, counseling, rehabilitation, adaptive programs, and qualifying service-dog programs.
- Caregiver Travel: One caregiver may be eligible to travel with the patient when medically necessary and availability permits.
ELIGIBILITY NOTE: Patients generally must have a medically necessary appointment, financial need (generally household income at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines), and a medical facility outside their local area, typically at least 50 miles away. Patients must generally be medically stable and able to travel without in-transit medical care. Requests can be submitted up to 45 days before an appointment; advance notice of at least 7–14 days is recommended.
