Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program:Â
AFA created the Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program in 2011 with a focus on taking care of our DAF service members. The program is made up of supporters beyond just those who have had the privilege of wearing the uniform: We are family members, community supporters, spouses, and friends who make up our Air & Space Forces family. We will always take care of our own.
Who We Help:
The Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program supports the Air Force Wounded Warrior (AFW2) program in its mission to provide personalized support and advocacy to wounded Airmen and Guardians, plus their caregivers and their families.
Travel Assistance:
Of the 11,000 wounded Airmen and Guardians currently enrolled in the Air Force Wounded Warrior program, approximately 5,000 have been medically retired—meaning they cannot receive funding from the Department of the Air Force to attend Warrior CARE events, the Air Force Warrior Games Trials, or the Warrior Games. However, these are the Warriors that often need these events the most.
That’s why AFA’s Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program is proud to offer Travel Assistance grants to medically retired Airmen and Guardians who have been identified by the Air Force Wounded Warrior (AFW2) program office as someone who could benefit from attending a Wounded Warrior event.
Financial Assistance Grants:
Not all wounded Airmen and Guardians are eligible for continued financial support from the DAF following their retirement. By design, AFA’s Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program exists to fill these gaps and ensure all the rehabilitative and quality-of-life needs of our wounded Airmen and Guardians can be met.
AFA offers Financial Assistance grants to eligible Airmen, Guardians, and caregivers that can be used to cover a variety of needs—from short-term rent and utility payment to pre-loaded gas cards. Grants can also help cover the cost of adaptive equipment to help Airmen and Guardians rehabilitate through adaptive sports.
In emergency situations, AFA’s Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program can approve and process financial assistance grants within 24 hours. We act quickly when we need to, such as paying an electric bill the same day we learn of the need so a wounded servicemember’s children will not be affected by the power getting shut off.
