SERVICE AREA: Local communities through Civitan clubs across the U.S. and internationally; Michigan has clubs in Bay City, Jackson, South Lyon, Adrian, Livingston, Midland, Lansing, Canton, Bath, Farmington, Wayne, and Westland.
CLIENTS SERVED: Primarily people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and local communities.
DESCRIPTION: Civitan International is a volunteer service organization with a special focus on improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Civitan is not a direct-service provider and its programs are administered through individual clubs. Local clubs assess client needs and determine eligibility. Not all clubs offer the same services.
PROGRAMS/SERVICES:
- Community Assistance: Local clubs address community needs through hands-on projects, donations, and volunteer service.
- I/DD Support: Clubs support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through recreation, social activities, accessibility projects, and other local initiatives.
- Accessible Home & Community Projects: Some clubs help with projects such as wheelchair ramps and accessible playgrounds.
- Camps & Recreation: Clubs organize and support inclusive camps, sports, outdoor activities, and recreational programs for people with I/DD.
- Family & Community Support: Clubs may provide assistance, events, or resources for families and agencies serving people with disabilities.
- Research Support: Civitan funds the Civitan International Research Center at UAB, supporting research into autism, Down syndrome, Rett syndrome, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other brain-related disorders.
- Local Club Grants & Projects: Civitan clubs can fund or participate in projects addressing specific needs in their communities.
