DESCRIPTION: Vanguard Community Development Corporation (VCDC) is a nonprofit community development organization focused on strengthening Detroit’s Historic North End. Its work centers on affordable housing, home preservation, economic development, and resident engagement.

SERVICES / PROGRAMS:

• Resilient and Healthy Homes Program: Provides home preservation and health and safety improvements, including structural hazard repairs, plumbing and electrical repairs, and energy-efficiency upgrades. Programs are announced on their website and social media when funding becomes available.
• Affordable Rental Housing: Develops and manages income-restricted rental homes for qualifying households. Properties include Melrose Square, West Oakland Homes, and Maxwell Homes.
• Community Engagement and Planning: Organizes neighborhood planning, resident discussions, educational workshops, and community initiatives addressing housing stability, health, and neighborhood development.
• North End Clean and Safe Ambassadors: Seasonal neighborhood cleaning and safety initiative that also provides part-time employment opportunities.
• North End Safety Patrol: Coordinates neighborhood volunteers who patrol in partnership with the Detroit Police Department. Paid training and mileage reimbursement are provided to participating volunteers.
• Economic Development: Supports business district revitalization and local business growth in the North End and Milwaukee Junction areas.
