Freedom House Detroit is a temporary home for indigent survivors of persecution from around the world who are seeking asylum in the United States and Canada. Our mission is to uphold a fundamental American principle, one inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, providing safety for those “yearning to breathe free.” Guided by our belief that all persons deserve to live free from oppression and to be treated with justice, compassion and dignity, we offer a continuum of care & services to our residents as well as to other refugees in need.
FreedomLives provides a safe home, food, clothing, and internet access for clients for up to two years. Our community house is the foundation of all of our other programming. When clients are ready to move out, this program provides housing relocation literacy and services. On average, 90% of Freedom House’s residents exit the program into independent housing.
FreedomAids provides a trained legal representative to guide clients to resolve any legal issues that have arisen, along with ensuring clients are safely moved into the community.
FreedomWorks connects clients to a variety of service providers and businesses to deliver pre-employability training- including developing a resume, learning to job search, volunteer experiences, and formal education or certification programs. On average, 90% of clients exit with jobs.
FreedomCares provides access to medical care and mental health care, so clients can begin to address the traumas that made them seek safety. Approximately 82% of our clients, women and men, are survivors of torture. These traumas often result in chronic health issues. Freedom House partners with health providers who can provide low- to no-cost services.
