SERVICE AREA: Michigan
CLIENTS SERVED: Michigan residents diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and their families and caregivers.
DESCRIPTION: ALS of Michigan is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with ALS maintain independence, comfort, and quality of life. It provides free equipment loans, caregiver assistance, communication support, transportation assistance, counseling, education, and other resources. Services are available statewide, although certain programs depend on location, funding, and availability. ALS of Michigan is not affiliated with the national ALS Association.
PROGRAMS/SERVICES:
- Medical Equipment Loan Closet: Provides free loans of durable medical and adaptive equipment, including manual and power wheelchairs, ramps, patient lifts, walkers, communication devices, and other equipment that supports mobility and daily activities. Availability depends on inventory.
- Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC): Provides speech-language evaluations, communication devices, equipment recommendations, and training to help individuals experiencing speech difficulties communicate more effectively.
- In-Home Care Assistance: Provides up to $500 per month toward professional in-home care for individuals with ALS, helping relieve family caregivers or support individuals without caregivers. Assistance is subject to funding and capacity.
- Transportation Assistance: The Thomas E. Worford, Jr. Transportation Program reimburses up to $300 annually for transportation through independent transportation companies. Assistance is available for individuals who can no longer drive or require wheelchair-accessible transportation to nonmedical appointments, family gatherings, community events, and other activities.
- Support Groups: Offers monthly support groups for people with ALS, family members, and caregivers to share experiences, receive emotional support, and learn about available resources.
- Counseling & Patient Support: Social workers and patient services coordinators provide emotional support, individualized guidance, and assistance navigating the challenges of living with ALS.
- Home Visits: Provides home visits when appropriate to assess individual needs, discuss available services, and connect families with resources.
- Information & Referrals: Provides ALS educational materials, resource guides, information about specialized medical clinics, and referrals to community services.
- Workshops & Seminars: Offers educational presentations and events covering ALS care, research, treatment developments, and practical issues affecting individuals and caregivers.
- Albert Burstein Wish Fund: Helps fulfill personal wishes that bring comfort, enjoyment, or meaningful experiences to individuals living with ALS.
RAMPS:
- Types: Portable, folding aluminum wheelchair ramps up to 10 feet long, available through the Medical Equipment Loan Closet.
- Availability: Based on individual mobility needs and available equipment inventory.
- Cost: Free, but considered a loan and not given permanently. Ramps remain the property of ALS of Michigan. The borrower would be expected to return it when it is no longer needed, so it can be made available to another person with ALS.

- Newly Diagnosed Individuals: Call 800-882-5764 to schedule an appointment with a Patient Services Coordinator for information, support, and referrals. Ask about a home visit if unable to travel to the office.
- Equipment Loans: Call to discuss equipment needs and availability.
- In-Home Care Assistance: Contact the Respite Coordinator at 248-354-6100 ext. 224.
