DESCRIPTION: DABO Detroit (Detroit Association of Black Organizations) is a community-based nonprofit that connects Detroit residents with resources and programs addressing health, stability, education, opportunity, and community well-being. DABO is a federation of more than 130 organizations working together to strengthen Detroit communities.
SERVICES & PROGRAMS:
- Utility Bill Assistance: Connects residents with assistance for utility bills.
- Property Tax Assistance: Provides assistance and information regarding property-tax hardship and exemptions.
- Home Improvements: For eligible Detroit residents in ZIP code 48227, DABO helps connect homeowners with free energy-efficient improvements through DTE’s Energy Efficiency Assistance Program, which may include insulation, a water heater, furnace, refrigerator, smart thermostat, LED bulbs, and advanced power strips.
- Food Distribution: Provides food access and community food-distribution opportunities.
- Health & Wellness: Offers health screenings, prevention resources, blood-pressure programs, HIV prevention/testing, and connections to health care.
- Behavioral Health & Recovery: Provides education, prevention, support, and referrals related to substance use, addiction, and suicide prevention.
- Senior Programs: Sizzling Seniors provides programming and activities for older adults, including wellness, social engagement, and enrichment.
- Youth & Family Programs: Includes a free after-school program for ages 5–18 with homework assistance, leadership and life-skills development, enrichment, snacks, and mentoring.
- Employment & Education: Connects residents with job training, education, and career opportunities, including workforce and skilled-trades programs.
- Technology & Digital Access: Connects residents with internet access, technology, digital-literacy assistance, and related resources through initiatives such as Connect 313 and Lift Zone.
