CLIENTS SERVED: Low- to moderate-income Oakland County homeowners, prospective homeowners, and residents needing home repairs or housing/financial counseling. Repair programs generally require the home to be owner-occupied and household income to be at or below 80% of Area Median Income (AMI).

DESCRIPTION: Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County helps individuals and families obtain safe, affordable housing through homeownership, critical home repairs, neighborhood revitalization, and financial coaching. Its home repair programs focus on safety, accessibility, weatherization, energy efficiency, and keeping homes up to building codes.

SERVICES & PROGRAMS:

• Critical Home Repair/Roofs, Ramps and Repairs: Provides home preservation repairs for eligible owner-occupied homes, including roof repair/replacement and wheelchair ramps, with additional repairs determined by the homeowner’s needs, home condition, and available funding. Eligible homeowners must be current on their mortgage, homeowner’s insurance, and property taxes or on an approved payment plan. A project fee is required, with the amount determined after the home assessment. Mobile homes and homes being purchased through a land contract are not eligible for this program.
• Mobile Home Repair Program: Provides repairs to eligible low- and moderate-income residents of designated mobile home parks. Examples include furnace replacement, roof repairs, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, electrical repairs, water heater replacement, and wheelchair ramps. This is not an emergency repair program.
• Madison Heights Critical Home Repair: Provides repairs to eligible homeowners in a designated area of southern Madison Heights. Repairs may include furnaces, roofs, porches/steps/decks, siding, water heaters, wheelchair ramps, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, and energy audits. The current application period is closed.
• Homeownership Program: Helps eligible first-time homebuyers purchase newly built or renovated, energy-efficient Habitat homes with an affordable mortgage. Applicants must meet income and credit requirements, save for a minimum down payment, and complete 300 hours of sweat equity. The homeownership process typically takes about 6–18 months.
• Habitat University: Provides one-on-one financial coaching and education through a HUD-certified housing and financial coach, including credit review, budgeting, debt reduction, savings, and preparation for homeownership.
• Rock the Block: Provides minor exterior home improvements in selected Oakland County neighborhoods through volunteers and community sponsors.
• Free Home Energy Assessment: Through the Consumers Energy Helping Neighbors partnership, qualified homeowners and renters can receive a free energy assessment and installation of free energy-saving products.

HOW TO APPLY:

• Critical Home Repair: Complete the Home Repair Community Interest Survey or contact Habitat Oakland at 248-338-1843.
• Mobile Home Repair: Apply through the Mobile Home Repair Program if the home is in a participating mobile home park.
• Homeownership: Complete the Homeownership Intake Form, then work with a lender to obtain pre-qualification before completing the full application.
• Habitat University: Contact Habitat Oakland at 248-338-1843 for financial coaching and education.
