CLIENTS SERVED: Individuals and families experiencing financial hardship who need help with a one-time, urgent expense. Assistance is reviewed individually and is not intended to provide ongoing financial support.
The Serving Our Neighbor (SON) Fund of the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament provides one-time cash assistance to people experiencing financial hardship. The fund focuses on immediate expenses that can make a significant difference in someone’s stability, such as avoiding utility shutoff, securing housing, or addressing an emergency transportation or other essential need. The SON Fund is not intended to provide continuous assistance. Requests are reviewed by a committee, and assistance depends on the circumstances of the request and available funds.
SERVICES & PROGRAMS:
- Emergency Utility Assistance: Assistance with urgent utility bills, including DTE payments needed to prevent shutoff.
- Housing Assistance: Help with security deposits and first month’s rent to help individuals obtain or maintain housing.
- Emergency Transportation: Assistance may be available for an urgent transportation expense, such as a train or plane ticket.
- Other Emergency Expenses: The committee considers other one-time essential expenses on a case-by-case basis, including an emergency car repair or temporary hotel stay when someone is facing an immediate need.
- Resource Referrals: When someone needs ongoing assistance, the SON Fund connects or refers them to other nonprofits and community organizations better equipped to provide continuing support.
