CLIENTS SERVED: Low-income individuals and families experiencing a financial crisis because of circumstances beyond their control, including unemployment, health crises, or natural disasters. Particular focus is given to seniors, people with disabilities, people with chronic or terminal illnesses, special-needs children, and women in transition, including those leaving domestic violence or reentering the workforce after divorce or the death of a spouse.

DESCRIPTION: Share A Smile is a Michigan nonprofit that provides financial assistance to individuals and families struggling to meet basic needs. Grants of up to $5,000 may be provided. Share A Smile pays bills directly rather than giving cash to applicants. They also operate several targeted programs for children and families. Share A Smile does not fund overdue mortgages, moving expenses, cable service, credit-card debt, automobiles, property taxes, or home-improvement projects such as windows, doors, or fences. It also generally does not fund other nonprofits’ programs or fundraising events.

SERVICES / PROGRAMS:

• Emergency Financial Assistance: Short-term assistance with basic or unexpected expenses when a household is experiencing a financial crisis. Examples can include rent and utility bills, particularly when the hardship is related to illness, unemployment, domestic violence, or another significant circumstance.
• Back to School: Provides children with clothing, backpacks and school supplies to help families facing financial hardship prepare for the school year.
• Winter Warmth: Provides new winter coats and other winter-weather clothing/supplies for children in need.
• Holiday Smiles: Adopt-a-family holiday program that provides assistance to families and children during the holiday season.
