New requirements for blood lead testing of young children: By law, Michigan now requires blood lead testing for all children at 12 months and 24 months of age and at other intervals based on exposure risk. This approach is commonly called “universal blood lead testing”. It is the physician’s responsibility to test or order the test.
Mission:
To improve the health and well-being of Michigan citizens by promoting safe & healthy home environments through comprehensive home-based intervention programs, lead certifications and regulations, public education and outreach, & state-wide partnerships.
Lead Safe Home Program (LSHP):
This program helps families identify and remove lead hazards from homes.
Community Development:
The Community Development Unit provides grant funds, technical assistance & oversight of lead hazard services to local communities. The purpose of this Unit is to expand lead hazard control in MI through community development.
Lead services for health and home:
There is no safe level of lead in the blood. If you believe your child was exposed to lead, contact your local health department or primary care provider to discuss getting a blood lead test. If your child has an elevated blood lead level, please contact a state, local, or national program to apply for lead services. Lead services are available to help: Find and fix lead hazards / Identify lead in drinking water hazards / Lower your child’s elevated blood lead level
Across the State of Michigan there are numerous lead-related programs and services. To see what program exists in your county, please contact one of the agencies below. If you do not see your county listed, contact your local health department to ask about other available services.
The Lead Prevention Fund is available to homeowners and income property owners who do not qualify for free MDHHS lead abatement services.
