SERVICE AREA: Detroit’s Eastside, generally within the boundaries of Van Dyke (west), Morang (east), Seven Mile (north), and Charlevoix (south).
CLIENTS SERVED: Detroit Eastside residents, particularly low and moderate income homeowners, prospective homeowners, renters, and households experiencing housing or financial challenges.
DESCRIPTION: U-SNAP-BAC is a community-based organization focused on strengthening Detroit’s Eastside through housing counseling, affordable housing, home rehabilitation, and financial education.
SERVICES & PROGRAMS:
- Homeowners Property Exemption (HOPE): Helps eligible low-income Detroit homeowners apply for a reduction or elimination of their current-year property taxes. Applicants must apply annually and provide proof of income and ownership.
- Senior Citizen Solid Waste Discount: Helps Detroit homeowners age 65+ who have a Principal Residence Exemption receive a $125 reduction on the city’s $250 solid-waste fee. The application period is July 1–September 15.
- Pre-Purchase Housing Counseling: Provides homebuyer education and one-on-one counseling to help prospective homeowners prepare for purchasing a home and qualify for certain down-payment assistance and mortgage programs.
- Credit Counseling: Provides one-on-one assistance with credit, budgeting, debt-to-income, and financial planning to help clients prepare for homeownership and improve financial stability.
- Rental Counseling: Helps renters find affordable housing, navigate rental applications, and understand the costs associated with renting a home.
- Eviction Prevention: Provides counseling and support to households facing eviction because of financial hardship, legal issues, or other crises.
- Financial Coaching: Provides one-on-one coaching, workshops, and resources to improve financial literacy, money management, and long-term financial stability.
- Affordable Housing & Home Rehabilitation: U-SNAP-BAC owns and manages affordable housing and is currently rehabilitating single-family homes for affordable homeownership through the Rebuilding Home Together program.
