CLIENTS SERVED: Low-income Detroit residents, including homeowners and renters facing eviction, foreclosure, unsafe housing conditions, or other housing instability. Home repair assistance is only available to UCHC homeowners who received assistance through UCHC homeownership programs such as Make It Home or Land Contract Buyouts. Other UCHC services are available to eligible Detroit residents who meet the requirements of the individual program.
DESCRIPTION:
United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) is a Detroit nonprofit that helps residents remain housed, prevent foreclosure and eviction, and move toward homeownership. Its services are provided free of charge to income-eligible individuals and families.
SERVICES / PROGRAMS:
- Home Repair Services: Provides critical repairs, accessibility modifications, and energy-efficiency improvements for eligible UCHC homeowners. Repairs may include roofing, plumbing, electrical, structural and foundation work, mold or water-damage remediation, wheelchair ramps, grab bars, widened doorways, stairlifts, insulation, windows, and heating/cooling improvements. Cosmetic repairs are not included. Applicants must have purchased their home through a qualifying UCHC homeownership or tax-foreclosure program.
- Homeownership & Foreclosure Prevention: Helps Detroit homeowners address tax or mortgage foreclosure, payment plans, financial counseling, and other issues affecting homeownership.
- Make It Home: Helps eligible Detroit residents living in tax-foreclosed properties pursue affordable homeownership through UCHC’s partnership with the City of Detroit.
- Land Contract Buyout / Homeownership Services: Provides assistance and counseling related to land contracts, homeownership, titles/deeds, and post-purchase support.
- Housing Stability & Tenant Support: Provides case management, referrals, utility-assistance connections, housing-placement assistance, and referrals for home repairs when unsafe conditions threaten housing stability.
- Eviction Defense & Right to Counsel: Provides free legal assistance and representation to eligible Detroit tenants facing eviction.
HOW TO APPLY:
Requirements and application procedures vary by program. Office is open Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; closed Saturday and Sunday.
- Home Repair Services: This is primarily for existing UCHC homeowners who received assistance through a qualifying UCHC homeownership program. These homeowners can call the main office and ask for the Homeownership Solutions or Tax Foreclosure Prevention program for a referral and guidance on the repair application process.
- Tax Foreclosure / Homeownership: Call the Tax Foreclosure Hotline at 313-725-4560 for assistance and program information.
- Eviction Defense: Call the Eviction Defense Hotline at 313-725-4646 if facing eviction or needing tenant legal assistance.
- General Assistance: Call 313-963-3310 to make an appointment. The office is open by appointment only.
